I sold my predator rifle two yrs ago and have been putting most of my money into improving my trap arsenal since then. I am looking to use part of my tax return to get another rifle. I mainly call in red fox and sometimes a yote. My last rifle was a. 223. I borrowed a. 204 last yr. Both guns seem to do way too much damage on fox. The last one i hit with the. 204 was a neck shot at 110 yds and it dam near took his head off. I am looking for something that will be more friendly on fox and still able to take yotes if one shows up. I am leaning towards a. 17 rem fireball. I know a. 17 HMr would do the trick on fox but i just dont trust that little shell on a 40+ pound dog. Im in pa and most of the shots are 100 yds or so with the occasional one out to 150-200. Anyone have any input or suggestions? I tried fmj. 223 ammo and it was a little better but still left bigger holes than i liked when hitting shoulder bones.

you can change bullets on them and they will not shoot thru them the barnes varmit grenade
and hornady v max will do the job with less fur damage and thats at high speeds .

You could give the 22 mag a look with a well constructed, non-varmint, type bullet. Maybe a 40gr SP.

Or a 221FB or 223R downloaded with the Sierra 55 SP or Barnes TSX. And stay off bone.

I am NOT a 17cal fan. I have tried several different flavors of that cool-aid and never could keep it down.

.22 mag out to 200? No way.

It's hard to beat a .223- plentiful and cheap ammo, good ballistics to 550m... I use my ad for everything from yotes up to deer, but I don't shoot any fox. An FMJ round would be good to minimize damage, but then you might have accuracy issues with the subpar bullets.

One option is varmint ammo. Barnes' varmint rounds fragment very well and most likely won't leave an exit wound on a good broadside shot.

If you are going to go the 17 route. I would get a custom barrel for it. With a 3 grooving lands. They are known for fouling barrels i had a factory barreled 17 rem and after about 15 shots the bullets would not even make it to the target!
22-250 is bad news on fox!
I would look long and hard at a 22 hornet or a 221 fireball. Both have enough punch out to 250 yards on a yote and with a heavier bullet you should not get a lot of splatter on your fox. Just like shooting a 22 mag with the heavy bullets.
If your shots are all inside 125 yards a semi auto 1022 22 mag would be the cats meow!
Like any rifle and fur, keep the shot off the shoulder you should be ok.
God Bless,
Dustin

I got a box of Sierra hollow point varminters in 30 cal that were 110 grain, loaded them for my .308 Winchester to about 3200 fps. They were sub moa in my Rem 700 SPS Varmint. Not going into details but it certainly puts an anchor on those dogs but there is a reason I switched to a 50 grain V-max in .223. Just sayin.

I use a 204 ruger and load a Berger 35 gr hp. Most of the time I don't get a exit hole. I have used 22 250 22 250AI 223 204. The 204 is my goto calling gun. I know a few guys rebarrel there guns to a 17/204 . Or try a 17 hornet.

22 Hornet as mentioned OR a .218 Bee using 40 gr SP or Vmax, they go in and don't come out while liquefying the boiler room.
